Finnish artist, Jaakko Pernu has been working in willow for some years, creating the most amazing sculptures. A childhood spent helping his father build boats put him in good stead for his future bending wood for more creative purposes. He says of his evocative pieces, “My theme is the influence of humans on nature – the influence of nature on humans.” allowing us to respond individually.
I personally feel this kind of environmental art is powerful and under utilised, especially in the UK. Landscape architecture could be revitalised if we were given the budget to incorporate these wonderful works of art which may in turn affect the environment in which they are placed, encouraging an elevated discourse as opposed to purely form, function and sustainability. Every city centre should have one!
